Without further ado...
The city had completely transformed and the streets were packed with action. Michael, Carrie and Hanna were making their way through the streets with little buckets in hand, ready for trick-or-treating later on. The early preparations they had seen in the morning had now come fully to life. The city was like one big haunted pumpkin patch. Glowing pumpkin faces had been set up all over the place, like guards standing on duty. There were skeletons and spiderwebs and ghostly suits of empty armour.
There were spookily dressed dragons everywhere. They were dressed as monsters that Hanna and Carrie had never seen or heard of before. Ghouls, ghosts, zombies, and vampires. Mummies, mermaids, minotaurs, and grisly bears. It was like walking through a fairytale.
There was one stall with a bubbling cauldron of green slime.
Michael stepped up to the stall and asked the werewolf-dressed shopkeeper for three cups of the green goo.
Michael gave a cup each to Hanna and Carrie.
“What is it?” Hanna asked.
“Kiwi and kale,” he said.
They reluctantly took a sip. It wasn’t as bad as it looked.
“Now, I think it’s time for some trick-or-treating,” said Michael with an eager grin.
They left the stalls and headed towards the living quarter in Scale City.
In its own way, it was just as lively. The cobblestone buildings were decorated with all manner of Halloween spooks and frights. There were young dragons all of the place, dressed in their costumes and moving in their little groups from house to house. They were walking around with buckets and satchels full of candy.
“So how do we do this?” Carrie asked.
“We go up to the door, we knock, and then we say trick-or-treat.”
“Just like that?” Hanna asked.
“I told you, Halloween is the best,” said Michael.
Michael led the way and demonstrated for the first house. Carrie and Hanna were in total shock as the candy was plopped into their buckets. Candy was a rarity back home in Courage Town. A special treat for special occasions. They were in disbelief.
They carried on from door to door, their buckets getting heavier and heavier.
Halloween had finally won Hanna over.
“This is the best holiday ever!” she said.
They kept going, filling their buckets, chomping down candy as they went. After an hour or so, their bellies were as full as their buckets. They were as jumpy as bumblebees in a flower shop, the sugar rushing straight to their heads.
They stayed for a while in the town square, chipping away at their candy. There was a band playing spooky music for a small crowd of dancing dragons. It was one of the liveliest evenings Hanna and Carrie had ever witnessed.
As the three of them ate their candy, they itched and scratched themselves every chance they had. Michael in his green paint, Carrie in her layers of toilet paper, and Hanna in her honey and hay.
“Now it’s time for the most important part of the night,” said Michael eventually.
Hanna and Carrie couldn’t imagine anything being more important than eating candy like they currently were.
“It’s time to visit the haunted house,” said Michael.
Michael had steered them well so far. They tried to have faith that he would be right again.
The three of them dropped off their buckets at Hanna’s place and started following Michael to the haunted house. Not too far away from the town square, they turned down a very narrow alley. They had crossed into a new area of busyness and liveliness.
Lots of little groups of young dragons were making their way down the narrow alley to the haunted house, while lots of other little groups of young dragons were running away from it.
They instantly knew when they had reached the house they were after. The building was old and made of cobblestone. It looked like an ancient castle where a vampire dragon might live.
Hanna, Carrie and Michael waited in line for a little while and then they went in.
The house was dark and spooky as they entered the main hallway, with paintings of fancily dressed old dragons on the walls. There were cobwebs and more scary-faced pumpkins with orange glowing eyes. In the middle of the house, there was a fireplace crackling away.
They continued on through the haunted house, but it was hard for them to concentrate.
The air was hot and sticky from the fireplace and all of the glowing pumpkins. It was like they were back on the farm, except it was even hotter.
Michael was overheating under all of his green paint and was sweating heavily. Carrie was having a similar issue with all of the toilet paper around her, boiling hot as the paper felt like it was just getting heavier and heavier. Hanna meanwhile was clawing at a bit of honey that had made its way into her ear. New itchy spots from the hay would pop up every few seconds. She was constantly chasing them – scratch scratch scratch!
A dragon dressed like a zombie jumped out at them to scare them, but they were too busy scratching.
“I can’t take it anymore!” shouted Hanna suddenly, scaring the zombie dragon much more than they had scared her.
Carrie and Michael answered at the exact same time. “Same!”
“This way!” said Michael.
They ran out of the haunted house, frantically itching and scratching as they went. It almost looked like they were dancing.
They took off, flying rapidly back to the town square. In the square, there was a splashing water fountain. The three of them went straight for it.
Splash!
In they went without a second of hesitation.
The three of them couldn’t stop laughing.
Finally, they weren’t itchy anymore.
